With the warmer weather around the corner and some moisture at hand, community members should prepare to combat weed growth throughout the city.

The City of Fort Morgan has an ordinance prohibiting land owners or tenants from allowing weeds to grow on their property, including the alleyways and easements.

Early prevention is the key to weed control.  Preventing weeds from growing to the point that they produce seeds is one of the better methods of controlling weed growth.

If you continue to cut them off at ground level it will prevent the root of the weed from getting nutrients and eventually it will die.  Keeping weeds cut also prevents seed production  which then keeps the seeds from spreading throughout the city and beyond.

On the left, we have provided pictures of various noxious weeds common to our community.  There are some that we even think of as "flowers", but they are not.  As with all noxious weeds, these weeds are very invasive and if allowed to grow, can crowd out plants that benefit the ecosystem.

There are many different options that are available for weed control.  Some of the non-chemical varieties are mulching, hand-weeding, cultivation, and mowing.  There are also many different varieties of herbicides available at many local area hardware and garden businesses as well.
