Fort Morgan Police

Chaplain's Program

Members of the Fort Morgan area clergy make up the Fort Morgan Police Chaplain's Program.  These chaplains volunteer their valuable time to the citizens of Fort Morgan in many different capacities.  They serve on a call rotation covering 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.  As police chaplains, they respond to requests from patrol officers to assist in situations that are uniquely suited to their training, such as death notifications and counseling.  Often, they act as a patrol officer's "heart."  An officer may see a situation that does not fall under law enforcement duties but still needs the touch of an individual who truly cares.  Unfortunately, within the hectic world of police work, the officer may not have the time or the abilities to meet the needs of the people involved.  By calling on the assistance of a police chaplain, the officer can rest easy knowing that the need may be met.  Additionally, the police chaplain may serve in mentoring and counseling roles for officers within the Fort Morgan Police Department.  Police chaplains are considered to be members of the Department's "family."  They serve on advisory committees within the Department and have open invitations to participate in any Department ride-a-long, training and social activities.  The Fort Morgan police chaplains have been active in assisting with the set up of other jurisdiction's chaplain programs and are available for use by other agencies and hospitals.  Our current chaplains are:  Ben Baughman, Robert Schreiner, Phil Tarman, Bob Tolson, Douglas Trevithick and Tom Wheeler.

The Police Chaplain's Philosophy

Believing that God is an answer to man's dilemma, the law enforcement chaplain bears witness to the love and power of God to law enforcement officers, their families, other members of their department, and the people they serve.

This pastoral care is offered to all people, regardless of race, sex, creed, or religion.

The law enforcement chaplain should be led in his or her own faith and actions by God's reconciling love to be available and ready to serve those in need.  The chaplain's ministry provides a source of strength to the law enforcement officers and their families, other Department members, the community, and the incarcerated.  The law enforcement chaplain is the catalyst of reconciliation, bringing God's love to the relationship of staff and officers, law enforcement agency and community, and their families.
